Serendipity

Under cover of darkness the two made their way, darting from shadow to shadow, stopping near a shrub at the edge of the lawn to access their surroundings.  They crouched, noses quivering, long ears rotating, straining to catch the least scent or sound of danger.  An owl hooted.

“I’m telling you, there isn’t anyone home.”  A voice sounded from nearby.

“Humph, that’s what you said at the last place.  I still have scars from the dude’s shotgun.”

An owl hooted and the two bunnies darted across the lawn.  The startled thieves stopped their advance as the porch light came on.

Rainy Day

The rich aroma of garlic, olive oil and thyme filled the kitchen, wafting into the living room where the family dogs lay napping.  A bit of this and a bit of that added to the notes of savory scents of the simmering pot of chicken and rice.

Outside the day was dreary with low grey clouds.  A wind swept rain drenched the yard and deck.

A key in the lock brought the dogs to their feet, tails wagging as George entered the house.  He inhaled deeply.

“Hmmm.  Just what I need, a hot bowl of my wife’s home made soup.”

Helping Hand

“David, come see.”

The thunderstorm had passed, leaving in its wake a quenched world glistening with drops of moisture.

Elizabeth squatted at the edge of the yard peering under the rosebush.

“What is it, Elizabeth?”  Her brother asked, annoyance apparent in his voice at having been sent outside to watch his little sister.

He squatted down beside her.  She pointed.

There unmoving in a shallow puddle was a small human form, delicate and fragile with gossamer wings.  David scooped it up, gently drying it with his handkerchief.  The wings flickered and the tiny being sat up, smiled and flew off.

Saturday Night

On Saturday night a family dinner party was held filling the house with merriment.  The guests indulged in their favorite foods and beverages regaling the hostess with their praises.  Conversation ebbed and flowed on occasion sparking a heated exchange. Toward the end of the evening a magnificent chocolate cake was served to the delight of all.

As the clock chimed the late hour the guests took their leave.  Farewells were said and promises of getting together again soon were made.

Host and hostess surveyed the remnants of the successful event and leaving the mess for morning headed off to bed.

Seasons

White!  White!  White!

Everywhere is white, blowing off the roof, covering the deck and yard and piling up in the driveway.  It falls from the sky in large, fluffy flakes burying the exposed ground once again in a blanket of monochrome color, dashing hopes of the sought after green of the change of seasons.  Boots, gloves and scarves are pulled on.  The shovel is retrieved from its storage spot and put to use clearing the walk.

One more day, one more week or is it a month to go before spring wrests the land from the snowy grasp of winter?

Hum of Life

The day stretched out in front of her, shinny and bright.  She stood on the deck, coffee cup in hand, contemplating.  There were so many things waiting to be done, laundry, vacuuming, and making beds, all the daily activities associated with maintaining a home.

She felt resistive to starting her day, thinking there must be more.  Where is the adventure, the excitement?

A lone call of an unseen bird floated through the morning air and a slight tingle of air brushing her cheek heightened the world around her and she smiled as the hum of life filled her with joy.
