Home Again

It is good to be back home and, yet, sad in a way.  We spent a wonderful week in a cabin on one of the big lakes in northern Minnesota, Lake Kabetogoma, with my in-laws, fishing and taking in the sunny days.  Just being away and having the time to relax and visit without the day-to-day hectic schedules we have at home recharged my batteries.

I read a couple of books, caught some fish and sat on the dock taking in the scenery.  While out on the boat we caught sight of Bald Eagles, Deer, numerous ducks and Loons and a beaver smacking the water with his tail letting us know we were getting too close to his house.  After a week I was ready to come home, sleep in my own bed, reunite with our dogs, touch bases with my family and get back to writing.

First Time Fishing

Overhead the sky was clear blue.  A few clouds were scattered here and there breaking up the expanse.  The surface of the lake was calm and serene.  Granite rock created islands covered with pine trees and shrubs.

Surrounded by wilderness the couple in the boat sat waiting for the slight tug, tug, tug of a fish on the line.  With a whisper she announced the catching of her first fish.

The pole tip up, the crank of the reel and a scoop of the net landed a fifteen-inch Walleye in the boat.  That night’s dinner went into the live well.

Getting away

June is the end of the school year, the beginning of summer vacation and the time to travel.  Here in the Midwest everything is green and growing and the fish are waiting to be caught.

Tomorrow my husband and I are headed ‘up north’ to spend the next week lounging in a cabin located on a beautiful lake with forest and wildlife in abundance fishing for Walleye.  We leave our electronics behind and get spotty cell phone reception making it truly a paradise getaway.

I won’t be posting any stories next week, but will likely have several fish stories to tell when I return. J

Have a great week and if you have the chance get out and enjoy nature wherever you are.

Vacation Time

The radio alarm came on.  Set to a low volume the music was gradually awakened the sleeping couple.

“Agh, morning already.  The good thing is after today its vacation time.”  Sue whispered her face still nestled into her pillow as she struggled to open her eyes.

As was typical of the week before leaving town, everyone and everything wanted her attention.  Late nights and early mornings had left her exhausted.

‘Come on sweetheart, up and at it.  One more day.”  Tom said.

Sue smiled at the thought of a week away, threw back the covers and slipped out of bed.

Dinnertime Disappointment

The group, tired from running a marathon, approached the hostess station located at the entrance to the hotel restaurant.  Inside they could see empty tables.

“Good evening.”

“Hi, a table for four.”

“I’m sorry, we have a reservation for a large party and there aren’t any extra tables.”

“How long of a wait for one of the booths?”

“I can’t say.”

A moment of silence as the group considered their willingness to walk any further.

“You must have some idea of when a booth will be available.”

“I really can’t say.”

They turned, disappointment on their faces, and limped out.

Road Trip

I am heading out of town this weekend to cheer on my daughters and son-in-law as they run a half marathon and to keep an eye on my grandchildren while their mother is running.  Mostly I will be keeping them entertained at the resort until the race is over.  J  After all the driving and chasing children I doubt I will have the energy to write on Monday when I get home.  L  So I am taking Monday off and will return on Wednesday, June 5th with another amazing story for your enjoyment.

Have a great weekend!
