Journey Back

Sand!  Fine, powdery, grainy, coarse, shifting sand as far as the eye could see.  At first glance the line after line of undulating dunes repeated into the distance with mind numbing monotony.  Slowly, as he scanned the area in front of him the various textures and hues appeared in the dip and rise of the landscape.  Here a spot of dull yellow-green, there a rough patch of exposed rock.

He unstopped his water bag and took a drink.  He knew his journey back to sanity would be difficult, but he had not envisioned having to cross such a barren wasteland.

News

She stood in the middle of her living room feeling as if she was standing on a frozen lake in the spring, listening to the water gurgling beneath the ice and feeling the warm breath of air brushing her face, warning of the thinning surface beneath her feet.  A hold your breath, something is going to happen kind of feeling.

The phone rang, jolting her out of her immobile state of being.  A phone call this early could not be good news, she thought, picking up the receiver.

“Hello.”

“Hi Mom, your newest great grandchild was born.  A baby boy.”

The Inheritance (5)

Lilly, her eyes gazing out the window at the passing scenery, noted their entrance to the park.  The sight brought memories of her younger self floating to the surface as she recalled all the time she had spent at this lake, at first with her parents and siblings, then with her friends and finally with her husband and their first two children.  She gave a quick glance into the backseat where her youngest sat, his two favorite dinosaurs held in his lap.  At eight-years-old he had not been born when Lily and her husband Brad moved away and she wondered what he thought of the upper mid-west area, so different from the southern California coast he was familiar with.

She turned back around, rolled her window down and paid the entrance fee to the attendant.  In the driver’s seat Brad sat tapping the steering wheel with his thumb in rhythm to the song emanating from the speakers.  He had been opposed to this trip back; rather vocal in fact about his opinion she should leave well enough alone, that there wasn’t anything to gain by coming back and, yet, she felt deep down there was.  No doubt Mike had in his keeping the book that had caused so much contention between them.  Not that he could use it or make anything of it; it was handed down mother to daughter when the daughter was ready to take on the mantel of responsibility possessing it required.  Something she had never wanted, going so far as insisting her younger sister be just as involved in the study of the knowledge contained inside as she was.  All she wanted was a normal life of hanging out with her friends, movies, concerts and shopping, even a regular, uneventful, job as a receptionist for a local manufacturing company was better than the crazy, bizarre world of her mother’s family.

She sighed as Brad pulled the car into a parking spot next to her sister’s vehicle and resolved herself to make the best of things.

Indulgence

Careful not to disturb her husband, she eased herself out of bed.  Barefooted, she padded into the lavatory, turning on the light after shutting the door.  She blinked until her eyes adjusted to the brightness.  With an easy pull she opened the mirrored door and perused the contents.  There on the bottom shelf nestled behind the toothpaste was the container she was looking for.  The round, chalky, tablets inside promised relief from the fire burning in her belly.

“Never again will I eat hot peppers after midnight.”  She told herself, knowing full well it was a self-promise she wouldn’t keep.

Having Fun

I have been busy hanging out with my grandchildren, having a lot of fun and getting so wore out by the end of the day all I can think of is crawling into bed.  As a result I haven’t had (taken) the time to write the next chapter of ‘The Inheritance’.  I have been thinking about it and will be posting the next chapter next Monday.  I need to set deadlines for myself or I will simply spend my days immersed in the world of my little ones, sharing in their unique blend of wonder and discovery as they explore and learn.

Catch Of The Day

Huddled inside oversized sweatshirts, caps pulled down low to shade young eyes, they focused on the bright yellow and orange bobbers floating nearby.  A soft breeze stirred the surface creating ripples.  Beneath them the boat rocked as it tugged against the anchor holding it in place.

In small hands poles bobbled and dipped as the two children wiggled in their seats, restless from inactivity.

“Where’s my bobber?”  One asked scanning the water.  “I have a fish, I have a fish!”

“Set the hook.  Keep the tip up.  Reel it in.”  He said as he smiled at his granddaughter’s first catch.
