Careful
not to disturb her husband, she eased herself out of bed. Barefooted, she padded into the lavatory,
turning on the light after shutting the door.
She blinked until her eyes adjusted to the brightness. With an easy pull she opened the mirrored
door and perused the contents. There on
the bottom shelf nestled behind the toothpaste was the container she was
looking for. The round, chalky, tablets
inside promised relief from the fire burning in her belly.
“Never again
will I eat hot peppers after midnight.”
She told herself, knowing full well it was a self-promise she wouldn’t keep.
