She stood
in the middle of her living room feeling as if she was standing on a frozen
lake in the spring, listening to the water gurgling beneath the ice and feeling
the warm breath of air brushing her face, warning of the thinning surface
beneath her feet. A hold your breath,
something is going to happen kind of feeling.
The phone
rang, jolting her out of her immobile state of being. A phone call this early could not be good
news, she thought, picking up the receiver.
“Hello.”
“Hi Mom,
your newest great grandchild was born. A
baby boy.”
